A Registered NGO in Cameroon
Women's Light Foundation is a Cameroonian community-based association working to advance the rights and opportunities of women, girls and underprivileged communities — registered, accountable, and rooted in the communities it serves.
Women's Light Foundation (WLF) is a Cameroonian community-based association registered under Law No. 90/053 of 19 December 1990 on Freedom of Association. It was founded by Ngong Sonedita Nyeah, a Cameroonian social entrepreneur and women's rights advocate known online as VeryDarkWoman. The Foundation was established in 2025, building on community work she was already undertaking.
We work at the intersection of gender justice, quality education, public health, environmental sustainability and economic empowerment. Programming is anchored in the Northwest and Southwest Regions, where the unmet development needs of women and girls are most acute, but the mandate is national in scope and long-term in vision. The Foundation is designed to endure and grow beyond any temporary circumstance, addressing structural inequalities rather than symptoms.
Why the Foundation exists
Cameroon has made significant national development progress, and yet the gap between that progress and the daily reality of women and girls remains wide. Nearly one in two Cameroonian women has experienced physical or sexual violence. Female literacy remains below 70%. Millions lack safe water and basic sanitation, and the burden of that absence falls on women and girls. Women make up the majority of smallholder farmers and informal traders while holding almost none of the land, credit or training.
These are not separate problems. They reinforce one another, and an organisation that addresses only one of them will watch its gains reversed by the others. That understanding shapes everything about how WLF is built.
How we are constituted
WLF is deliberately constituted as an association rather than an NGO at founding. Association status allows swift registration, community trust and operational agility — and it places accountability first with our own members and the communities we serve. We maintain a registered constitution, a governing bureau, a general assembly and all records required under Cameroonian law.
The intention is to grow into a fully accredited Non-Governmental Organization recognised by the Cameroonian State. We will pursue recognition as an association d'utilité publique with the Ministry of Territorial Administration, and subsequently full NGO accreditation once we meet the requirements for audit history, programme documentation and governance compliance. This phased approach ensures the Foundation grows on a solid legal and institutional foundation rather than seeking status prematurely.
Accountable by design
Accountability is built into the structure rather than reported after the fact. Financial authority and programme authority are held separately. A Community Accountability and Reporting Mechanism gives the communities we serve a confidential channel to raise concerns, including about us. Annual reports, audited financial statements and programme impact reports will be published as they become available; none has been published yet. All programme data is disaggregated by sex, age, disability status and geographic location.
Every member of staff, every volunteer and every partner is bound by our policy on Protection from Sexual Exploitation and Abuse. This is not negotiable and it is not a formality.
