Marking World Menstrual Hygiene Day in local schools

Menstrual hygiene management remains a major barrier to girls' school attendance. Our team visited schools to talk openly with pupils and distribute supplies.

Founder and team visited local schools to mark World Menstrual Hygiene Day, delivering sessions with pupils and distributing supplies.

Menstrual hygiene management is one of the most significant practical barriers to girls' school attendance in Cameroon, and one of the least discussed.

The arithmetic of a missed week

Without private facilities, clean water and supplies, a menstruating girl can miss several days of school every month. Over a term that becomes a week or more; over a year it becomes enough missed instruction that catching up stops being realistic. The dropout that follows is usually recorded as a girl leaving school, not as a sanitation failure.

This is why menstrual health runs through two of our pillars at once. It is an education intervention because it determines attendance, and a WASH intervention because it depends on facilities, water and supplies being physically present in the school.

What the sessions cover

  • Open, factual discussion of menstruation with pupils, in a setting where the subject is usually avoided.
  • Distribution of sanitary supplies.
  • Practical guidance on hygiene management with the facilities a school actually has.
  • Conversation about dignity and about not missing school.

Facilities, not only information

Education alone does not solve it. A girl who understands menstrual hygiene management but has no private latrine, no water and no supplies is in the same position she started in. Our WASH pillar therefore pairs these sessions with menstrual hygiene management provision in supported schools — facilities, supplies and education delivered together.
